"Thor" movie review
I recently read a movie review about "Thor." The review said, "The movie was all thunder and no lightning." It also said that the set that takes place in "Asgard" ( the equivalent of the Viking's belief in Valhalla, otherwise known as heaven) often looked fake. My opinion differs from that of the review I read. I believe the movie was all "Lightning!" and the set design was amazing. I felt that it did not look fake at all. To me the set design was grand and vibrant in color. It made me feel that there was truly a place other than Earth called "Asgard."
The movie has great actors in it. It has Sir Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgard, Rene Russo, Kat Dennings, and Idris Elba. The movie is directed by actor, turned director, Kenneth Branagh.
The film has elements in it similar to a William Shakespeare play. Its themes are brother-rivalry and a father favoring one child more than another.
The film starts off at a ceremony, as Thor (played by Hemsworth ) is about to be named as king of Asgard. He is to take over the thrown of Odin. (Played by Hopkins ) Before the ceremony is completed, the Frost Giants, ( the enemies of the Asgard realm ) break into the kingdom to create some unexpected mischief. Thor, full of arrogance, retaliates and leads a small but kick ass team into the Frost Giants realm called "Yodenheim." (unfortunately I do not know if that is the correct spelling for that ) Odin finds out of this, and takes away Thor's powers and banishes him to Earth. Upon arriving on Earth Thor literally runs into Jane Foster (played by Portman ) and her team which is Skarsgard and Dennings. While on Earth ominous plans unfold on Asgard beyond Thor's banishment.
The only criticisms I have of this film are two. I felt that they did not fully develop the love story between Thor and Jane Foster. They could have easily extended the film by about twenty or thirty minutes to develop it more. Lastly I felt that they did not "Nerd-up" Natalie Portman very much. Her character in the movie is a scientist, a scientist that is already sexy. I think they should have put some glasses on her, and maybe put her hair up in a bun, then slowly, gradually make her look sexier and sexier as you learn that she is falling for Thor.
